Detailed Overview


Reporting to the Manager, Rehabilitation Services and under the general supervision of the Clinical Practice Leader, Speech/Language Pathology, performs a variety of speech and hearing duties, at various sites within Fraser Health, such as administering routine screenings and procedures, assisting Audiologists and the Speech‑Language Pathologists with patient treatments, and monitoring and maintaining inventory and equipment. Schedules patient procedures, admits and discharges patient referrals to Speech & Hearing services, and performs clerical duties as required.


Responsibilities



  1. Prepares patient materials and related material, including communications boards, using graphics software.

  2. Monitors the functioning of communication equipment, including Canon Communicator Units, Pocket Talkers, electrolarynges (e.g., Servox), Cooper Rand voice amplifiers, and hearing aids by checking function, replacing batteries, cleaning units, and making arrangements for repairs as required.

  3. Administers routine screenings and procedures to patients in follow up to diagnoses and treatment plans established by Audiologists and Speech‑Language Pathologists, including hearing screenings, impedance and pure tone testing, otoacoustic emission testing, and the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly (HHIE). Assists with patient treatments under the supervision of a Speech‑Language Pathologist, including thermal stimulation, oral‑motor exercises, communication exercises, and conversation groups. Makes preparations for procedures, such as preparing barium mixtures, and ordering, picking up, and organizing dysphagia trays.

  4. Provides information to patients and family members on speech & hearing topics, including communication strategies, benefits of hearing aids and communication devices, and available community resources for follow‑up.

  5. Schedules patients for procedures requested by physicians, such as modified barium swallows, by booking, confirming, and changing appointments as required. Forwards procedure results to physicians.

  6. Admits and discharges patient referrals to all Speech & Hearing services by entering and updating patient information into the computerized ADT patient records system. Maintains and updates manual patient referral logs. Obtains patient information and completes necessary forms for Speech & Hearing services, including the Swallowing Intervention Service.

  7. Assists with inventory control of equipment, materials, and supplies by monitoring stock, reporting shortages, and preparing necessary forms to requisition. Organizes and cleans materials and equipment.

  8. Performs clerical functions, including answering the telephone, directing calls, relaying messages, keyboarding, data entry, printing reports, faxing, mailing, filing, photocopying, and receiving visitors and directing them to the appropriate areas of the hospital. Records workload data for statistical purposes. Compiles, maintains, and submits computerized and manual statistics as required.

  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications


Education and Experience


Two (2) years' recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience such as completion of a Speech and Language Assistant training program.


Skills and Abilities



  • Ability to keyboard at 45 w.p.m.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to deal with others effectively.

  • Ability to organize work.

  • Ability to operate related equipment.

  • Valid BC, Class V Drivers' Licence and access to a vehicle.

  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
