Identity Engineering owns the systems responsible for onboarding all consumers and managing their authentication and verification journeys across affirm’s product surfaces. In this role you will gain a deep understanding of the business, product and engineering context, and utilize that context to own and deliver high‑availability and low‑latency systems on the critical paths for all of our products.


What You’ll Do



  • With the support of your team’s tech lead and manager, break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and collaborate with others to ensure timely delivery of your work.

  • Support your peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design and analytics by participating in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that properly consider risks and trade‑offs.

  • Support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” and on‑call efforts.

  • Contribute to a sense of community on your team by engaging in growth and development activities such as participation in the interview process.


What We Look For



  • 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer.

  • Experience designing, developing and launching backend systems and proficiency in either Python or Kotlin.

  • Familiarity with the building blocks of distributed systems, and technologies such as AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.

  • Ability to take a simple problem or business scenario into a solution that interacts with multiple software components, writing clear, well‑tested and extensible code.

  • Comfort navigating a large code base, debugging others’ code, and providing constructive feedback through code reviews.

  • Demonstrated ownership of your growth, proactively seeking feedback from teammates, managers and stakeholders.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with a global engineering team.

  • Either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.


Pay Grade – L


Equity Grade – 5


Employees new to affirm typically come in at the start of the pay range. affirm focuses on providing a simple and transparent pay structure based on location, experience and job‑related skills. Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include monthly stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits such as 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents. Additionally, employees may be eligible for equity rewards offered by affirm holdings, inc.


CAN base pay range per year: $125,000 - $175,000

The majority of our roles are remote and you can work almost anywhere within the country of employment. affirmers in proximal roles have the flexibility to work remotely, but may be required to work out of their assigned affirm office occasionally. A limited number of roles remain office‑based due to the nature of their job responsibilities.
