Additional Working Conditions


Tasks may require exposure to various conditions including an industrial environment, inclement weather, working at heights, confined spaces, and hot ambient conditions. These tasks may also be performed under emergency conditions.


Salary Range: $31.31 per hour


YOUR FOCUS


Reporting to the Shift Operator 2 and the CHP Superintendent, the Shift Operator 1 works in the Central Heating Plant. UNB operates a high-pressure steam Heating Plant consisting of (5) Boilers which burn Biomass, Bunker C and Natural Gas to produce high-pressure steam on an uninterruptable basis for heating and process equipment through an approximate 5 km distribution and return system to UNB, STU, RPC, DECRH. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the high-pressure steam heating plant at UNB.



  • Assist in the operation of a high-pressure steam heating plant following duties as defined by NB-Regulation 84-175 under the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act.

  • Order and receive wood, take wood samples, and direct wood to the appropriate silo. Wood is received 24 hours a day, as required.

  • Maintain clear and safe passage to receiving hopper. Ensure hopper doors are clear of snow and/or ice and open at the time of delivery.

  • Adapt to new operating techniques, new technology and modern automated equipment as new initiatives are implemented within the steam and condensate systems.

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance, as required, on Boiler equipment and steam/condensate equipment within the tunnel system.

  • Perform Shift Maintenance 1 duties, as required.

  • Assist in cleaning the boiler room, silo area, equipment, and surrounding property.

  • Ensure all visitors, contractors, and students within the Central Heating Plant follow UNB's safety regulations.

  • Maintain containment systems for fuel oil storage. Ensure manual draining of the containment system to control groundwater and runoff water.

  • Isolate equipment to allow personnel to perform maintenance.

  • Adjust plant equipment and controls to compensate for varying load conditions, fuel switching, shutdowns, and emergency conditions such as power failures.

  • Monitor and record fuel levels on the oil water separator system and standby generator weekly. Report any abnormal findings.

  • Perform related duties as required.


What You Bring



  • Possess a valid third (3rd) class Power Engineer License as defined by NB-Regulation 84-175 under the Boiler and Pressure Vessels Act.

  • Must have knowledge of lock-out and tag-out permits, and equipment as required by Work Safe NB.


Additional Strengths



  • Experience in the operation of a High-Pressure Heating Plant would be an asset.

  • Knowledge and ability to use the equipment and procedures employed in the operation and maintenance of a second-class high-pressure steam heating plant.

  • Must be capable of coping with emergencies involving boilers and associated equipment.

  • Computer skills are considered an asset.
