Come join our team and be a part of the group of Security Guards who provide onsite and digital monitoring at our St. John's locations including Confederation Complex (100 Prince Philip Drive), Arts & Culture Building (95 Allandale Road), Marine Institute (155 Ridge Road), Natural Resources Building (50 Elizabeth Avenue).
About Us
The Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers and construction and management of provincial government buildings.
About the Opportunities
Security Services is responsible for the protective services and safeguarding of government employees, visitors, buildings and facilities, equipment and property against damage or loss from theft, fire, vandalism, or other causes. Key activities include, but not limited to:
frontline security for buildings and control access of employees, visitors and contractors (security control desks/P2000) at any GNL facility assigned including investigation of suspicious persons/activity and take appropriate action, as required;
monitor and control of building systems including fire, energy management, security systems and closed-circuit television (CCTV)/recording utilizing various computer terminals and equipment;
performs visual inspections of mechanical and electrical rooms;
performs preliminary investigations into thefts, vandalism, disturbances, intrusion and fire alarms;
mobile patrol of all GNL facilities as designated and respond to any request for assistance and/or intrusion alarm and patrol buildings to protect GNL property/infrastructure, equipment and material from hazards such as threats, trespass, theft, fire and accidental/willful damage.
prepares shift logs and writes reports;
performs traffic and parking patrol including enforcing parking regulations/issuing traffic tickets;
performs emergency response assistance and medical aid, as required;
provides sworn testimony in court as witness regarding security violations and other matters;
other related duties as assigned.
Screening Criteria
About You
If you've completed a certified Security Guard course or you have related experience within a field such as Law Enforcement, we want to talk with you We'd also like to learn more about your experience in front line, security access as well as building patrol security at large, public facilities. Experience in traffic control would be a bonus.
Assessment Criteria
Your knowledge of security and safety protocols and procedures, as well as your commitment to Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices will enhance your duties in this role.
In this front line, service position, you will perform your duties in a professional manner as you interact with various stakeholders that range from employees, executives of client departments to vendors, technical staff and members of the general public. When faced with confrontational and stressful circumstances , you think critically to apply independent decision making and sound judgment, and balance competing demands as needed.

Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 license.
Recent and satisfactory Driver's Abstract.
Recent and satisfactory Criminal Records Check from local police.
Valid first aid certificate (CPR and AED).
Conditions of Acceptance
Opportunities are casual, call-in hourly and may vary in duration, including 12-hour shifts if applicable.
Successful applicants will participate in a rotating 24/7 coverage shift schedule, including weekends and holidays.
This position requires considerable standing, walking and physical exertion during shifts while making rounds, enforcing parking regulations, snow removal, etc.
Required to drive from site to site during night patrols, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
Work is performed both inside and outside the site, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
Required to wear uniform and/or safety equipment such as safety boots, hardhat, safety vests, safety glasses and personal protection measures when required.
