Report Engineer
Job Description
The Report Engineer (BI Developer) is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining high‑quality reporting solutions that transform raw data into meaningful insights. This role requires strong hands‑on Power BI capabilities and intermediate experience with Azure Synapse Analytics to support modern BI and analytics workflows.
Location: Across Canada
Status: Contract, Hybrid
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather and document reporting requirements
- Design, build, and optimize Power BI dashboards, datasets, and paginated reports
- Develop data models using best practices aligned with performance and usability standards
- Use Azure Synapse Analytics (SQL pools, pipelines) to support data ingestion, transformation, and analysis
- Write and optimize SQL queries and transformations for reporting purposes
- Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and quality across all BI deliverables
- Implement Row‑Level Security (RLS) and follow governance standards for data access
- Troubleshoot report issues and provide enhancements to existing BI solutions
- Document data flows, logic, models, and dashboards for internal and external stakeholders
Requirements
- Strong hands‑on experience developing Power BI dashboards, datasets, and DAX calculations
- Capital Markets experience is required
- Proficiency in Power Query (M), data modeling, and report performance optimization
- Intermediate-level experience with Azure Synapse Analytics (SQL pools, pipelines, transformations)
- Strong SQL skills and familiarity with data warehousing concepts (ETL/ELT, dimensional modeling)
- Experience pulling data from multiple sources (databases, APIs, cloud storage, files, etc.)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with technical and non‑technical teams
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Azure Data Factory or Databricks
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines for BI assets (Git, DevOps)
- Familiarity with other BI tools (Tableau, Looker, MicroStrategy)
- Azure or Power BI certifications
- Experience with enterprise data governance and security best practices
