Duties

Inspectors work in a high-stress environment due to the possible impact of error and conflict. Decisions have a direct impact on safety of Canadians.

Work environment


We are looking for dynamic candidates to join Transport Canada. The organization employs over 6,000 people across regions and at the Ottawa Headquarters. We develop policies and enforce acts and regulations that support transportation efficiency, safety, security, environmental responsibility, and global standards.

Operational Requirements


Must be willing and able to travel and work overtime on short notice.


You need (essential for the job)


Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following qualifications. Education, Experience, and Asset qualifications must be demonstrated with concrete examples in your résumé and screening questions.



  • Education: Secondary school diploma or equivalent and possession of a valid Canadian Certificate of Competency as a Master, Near Coastal or higher.

  • Experience: Experience normally acquired over five consecutive years in marine design, construction, repairs, operation, inspection, quality assurance or other marine-related areas; or experience in technical or operational management of ships; or experience as chief engineer or second engineer on ships.

  • Knowledge: Knowledge of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and related regulations; knowledge of international maritime legislation including conventions.

  • Competencies: Judgement, Flexibility, Reliability, Analytical Thinking.

  • Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to analyze technical matters and resolve operational problems; ability to work in a stressful environment with multiple priorities and tight deadlines.


Language requirements (essential for the job)


English essential. Applied / assessed at a later date.


You may need (asset qualifications)



  • Degree from a recognized university in nautical studies or maritime studies (asset).

  • Experience as a master or chief engineer on vessels; experience in safety management systems, quality assurance programs, or vessel-related roles; experience with port operations or surveys; experience managing large technical projects.

  • Knowledge of specialized operations in tankers, LNG, TDG, and cargo handling.
