Fully Remote In-House Lawyer, Insurance & Claims
Job Description
Your New Company
Join a rapidly growing, cybersecurity‑focused organization recognized for its ability to manage complex incidents, support clients during cyber breaches, and deliver high‑stakes legal and technical solutions. This fully remote company operates across Canada and empowers its legal professionals to work autonomously while being deeply embedded in collaboration with crisis‑response, technical, and insurance partners.
You’ll be stepping into a role previously held by a highly experienced associate and joining a team that values depth of legal knowledge, adaptability, and strong communication. With a national footprint, a supportive executive team, and a people‑first culture, this is an exceptional opportunity for an insurance lawyer seeking to broaden their practice into cyber, breach response, and incident management.
Your New Job
As an Associate Lawyer, Insurance & Claims, you will serve as a core legal adviser across insurance, claims assessment, breach response, and litigation management. You’ll support internal crisis‑response teams, guide clients through cyber and tech‑related incidents, and work closely with external counsel and insurance partners.
You will also contribute to contract drafting, policy interpretation, liability analysis, and corporate legal documentation. This is a standout opportunity for a lawyer with a background in insurance—either in private practice or in‑house—looking to diversify into cyber, media, and tech E&O work.
Your role will include:
- Assessing and advising on insurance claims and policy coverage
- Managing litigation and third‑party liability matters arising from cyber breaches
- Supporting breach response teams during incidents, offering practical, timely legal advice
- Drafting and reviewing insurance clauses, NDAs, partner agreements, and liability provisions
- Liaising with insurers, external counsel, brokers, and internal business units
- Supporting internal documentation, regulatory monitoring, and legal recordkeeping
- Participating in crisis‑management efforts, breach simulations, and industry initiatives
- Reviewing policies for key insurance partnerships and providing coverage analyses
- Interacting with IT, sales, external vendors, and cross‑functional crisis‑response teams
This is a 100% remote role, with minimal travel (approx. 0–5% as needed), reporting directly to an Ontario‑based EVP.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
You will excel if you bring:
- Membership in the Ontario Bar
- 3+ years of post‑call experience in insurance law (in‑house or private practice)
- Proven experience with claims, coverage analysis, policy interpretation, and insurance drafting
- Knowledge of cyber insurance, breach response, or data protection (asset but not required)
- Strong judgment and the ability to communicate legal advice clearly to non‑legal audiences
- Experience working with external counsel and managing litigation
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating across teams
- Excellent communication, professionalism, and a proactive mindset
- Comfort supporting a fast‑moving breach‑response team when incidents arise
- Experience with tech, media, cyber E&O, or crisis‑management environments (asset)
Your predecessor was successful because they were a seasoned insurance practitioner (20+ years, including 8 in cyber/insurance) with a strong grasp of coverage and claims. This serves as a benchmark for the type of expertise that thrives here, though the role is open to candidates within the posted experience range.
What You’ll Get in Return
- Competitive salary: $140,000-150,000, depending on experience
- Fully remote work, anywhere in Canada
- RRSP match (2%) after the first year
- Extended health & dental benefits at 100% employer‑paid (beginning after 6 months)
- 40 hours of personal/sick leave
- 3 weeks of vacation (potentially negotiable upward)
- Minimal travel (0–5% as needed)
- Supportive leadership, including direct access to an EVP and cross‑functional teams
- Exposure to cutting‑edge cyber, tech, and insurance matters in a rapidly evolving industry
