Job Description

The Distribution Manager reports to the Vice President of Operations and Logistics. The incumbent is responsible for effectively overseeing the operations of the distribution area. The incumbent is accountable for managing the total distribution process, which includes sub-processes such as selecting; packing; loading and delivering of goods. The Distribution Manager is also responsible for other relevant processes such as handling product returns, receiving, verification, and stock replenishment. The Distribution Manager works with the national WMS team to continually optimize the functionality of the WMS processes. He/She is accountable for meeting the Company’s customer service standards and achieving the cost center’s targeted expense budgets.


What you should expect:


The Distribution Manager is in direct contact with the employees in the Distribution Centers (2 locations). He/She oversees the operations and indirectly supervises and coordinates the work of all the employees attached to the distribution centers.


The Distribution Manager, indirectly through subordinates, supervises the employees attached to the distribution center. He/She also directly manages the activities of the remote DC team, through the remote warehouse manager. He/She carries out these responsibilities in accordance with the Company’s policies and the applicable laws and regulations.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.



  • Oversees the operations of the distribution area. Prepares work schedules to ensurework flow meets or exceeds customer service standards. Enforces and monitors established work procedures. Monitors staffing services and ensures adequate numbers to meet the production levels. Analyzes performance reports and compiles data to create productivity reports and conducts presentations to senior management on the results. Conducts weekly meeting with area supervisors and remote location manager, to discuss current concerns and problems and determine solutions.

  • Ensures employees are trained on proper processes and sub-processes, as well as equipment usage, material handling and maintenance. Develops policies and procedures to meet the requirements of Total Quality. Ensures proper health and safety practices are followed at all levels in the warehouse.

  • Ensures compliance with the Company policies, and /or guidelines, maintains the layout of the shelving area and warehouse, taking into consideration productivity, inventory, turnover, size, weight and other relevant factors. Ensures customer service standards are met. Maintains internal business controls to ensure compliance with goals.

  • Determines purchasing requirement for equipment, machines and supplies. Attends trade shows to keep abreast of new technologies available to maintain efficiency.

  • Arranges shipping schedules to meet the immediate needs of customers and branches. Prepares reports on commitment levels, maintenance schedules, mileage and transportation of dangerous goods. Ensures all vehicles operate in full compliance with provincial and federal legislation. Prepares report on all repairs and maintenance received on trucks, machinery and equipment.

  • Maintains and reviews the ongoing performance of the functional departments within the distribution area. Identifies areas for improvement and notifies Facilities Manager of same. Interviews and hires personnel within the distribution area.

  • Provides direction, coaching and leadership to the distribution area.

  • Maintains a positive work climate and resolves concerns or complaints from employees.

  • Enforces proper implementation and application of company policies and procedures in general, but specifically those regarding inventory control, delivery, security and safety.

  • Keeps track of products to determine causes for discrepancies between inventory counts and stock control records, and recommends remedial action to resolve discrepancies.

  • Ensures proper implementation and application of company policies and procedures in the area of fixed assets; prepares proper recommendations for budget purposes and proceeds with purchases once authorized; ensures safeguarding of all fixed assets in the warehouse.

  • Monitors expense levels within the distribution area and ensures corrective action is taken to control/reduce costs to ensure the attainment of budget.

  • Assists in preparing the annual budget in accordance with guidelines and instructions received.


What you should bring:



  • University degree in an appropriate field plus a minimum of eight (8) years related experience in the industry, including five (5) years in a management capacity, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous WMS super-user experience a definite asset.


COMMUNICATION / COMPREHENSION SKILLS



  • Ability to read and interpret relevant documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence to employees and senior management. Ability to speak effectively in front of a group of customers or employees to convey information and gain acceptance of ideas. Able to professionally liaise with business stakeholders across the country, in order to determine operational priorities.

  • Is good at establishing clear directions; sets stretching objectives; distributes the workload appropriately; lays out work in a well-planned and organized manner; maintains two-way dialogue with subordinates on work and results; brings out the best in people.
