Court Officer
Job Description
As the Court Officer, you provide registry and courtroom support for criminal and civil matters across all levels of court. You ensure the effective operation of hearings and processes court documents in accordance with legislation, policy, and the Rules of Court. You will require independent decision-making, regular interaction with the public and legal community, and a high level of professionalism to uphold the integrity of the justice system.Key Responsibilities
- Ensure efficient operations of courtrooms and chambers in accordance with the Rules of Court.
- Review and process court documents to ensure compliance with federal and territorial legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Prepare materials for assigned court sittings and complete related follow-up.
- Interpret legislation and Rules of Court for the judiciary, legal community, and public.
- Exercise statutory authority with minimal supervision.
- Maintain conduct that supports the administration of justice and judicial independence.
- Provide information and assistance to clients, legal professionals, and court users.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of the court system and the ability to learn government programs and services.
- Ability to interpret, explain, and apply federal and territorial legislation and the Rules of Court.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to meet strict deadlines.
- Effective communication skills for working with the public, judiciary, and legal community.
- Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and make sound decisions.
Key Qualifications
- Completion of a relevant diploma (paralegal, legal secretary, public/business administration) with two (2) years of experience.
- Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C, and AED certification (training and recertification provided within six months of employment).
