Job Description

This position is a great fit for someone who is passionate about environmental education, community engagement and hands-on tree care, or who is eager to build their knowledge and experience in these areas.


As an integrated member of the Community Programs team, this role focuses on supporting LEAF's community housing programs in Toronto, York Region and Durham Region to engage tenants in the planting and care of trees and shrubs on their properties.



Reporting Relationships

Reports to: Community Programs Manager

Direct reports: None



Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The list below outlines the major responsibilities; however, additional tasks may be assigned as needed.
  • Engaging with residents during community outreach events and tree planting consultation meetings
  • Collecting tree health data using an inventory protocol, conducting data entry and summarizing data findings in reports
  • Gathering feedback from participating tenants through phone calls and emails
  • Providing support to community housing residents on proper tree planting technique and tree care practices online and in-person
  • Conducting tree stewardship activities (watering, mulching, monitoring) at community housing properties across Toronto, York Region and Durham Region
  • Providing general administrative support as needed
  • Participating in weekly Community Programs team meetings, weekly one-on-one meetings, and monthly organization-wide meetings, including taking minutes and tracking action items
  • Tracking monthly metrics
  • Assisting with other Community Programs as needed



Working Conditions
  • Hybrid – includes a combination of office tasks and in-person field work (office days may be worked from home or in office)
  • Outdoor work in various weather conditions
  • Occasional evening and weekend work
  • Some days require several hours of driving or carpooling
  • Working on-site at community housing properties



Requirements


Minimum Qualifications:

Certifications, tools and software: G or G2 Driver's License; Clean Driving Record

  • Commercial vehicle operation - You can safely operate trucks, vans and other (lightweight) commercial vehicles in compliance with safety regulations and organizational standards.

  • Physical strength and stamina - You possess the strength and the stamina to perform physically demanding tasks in varied weather conditions, including lifting and planting.
  • Digital Literacy - You are proficient with the use of digital devices and tools to obtain, create or process digital information in a secure manner.
  • Operational Planning – you can effectively determine the steps and tasks to meet key objectives on time.

Asset Qualifications:

Education/Equivalent: A degree or diploma in Community Engagement; Arboriculture; Urban Forestry; Environmental Science; Plant Biology or related field

Certifications, tools and software: Emergency First Aid & CPR



Experience
  • Entry Level Position
  • Experience working or volunteering with a non-profit organization an asset
  • Experience living or working within social/community housing communities an asset

Other Requirements

This position is made available through Canada Summer Jobs. The following requirements are necessary:
  • Be between the ages of 21 and 30
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations
  • Note that foreign students are not eligible

Compensation

Wage: $20.30/hour

Additional Benefits:
  • Paid time off, including Wellness Leave
  • Cell phone allowance of $10 per pay cheque (bi-weekly pay schedule)
  • Some travel expenses covered
  • Co-pay health and dental benefits available after three months
